Review the chart below to determine the screen dimension(s) of your target audience, then proceed to the Downloads page to learn more about the recommended grid systems and obtain sample templates.

We've done everything we could to provide comprehensive, verifiable information here for the most common platforms and screen dimensions. All screenshots were created with default browser settings under fresh user accounts, so things like Dock size and toolbars are all in their initial state. Vertical scrollbars have been forced on. Every measurement in the table below links to the corresponding screenshot that was used so you can see for yourself how we arrived at these numbers.

If we missed a major browser or a platform, you can help us out. Visit our Measure utility, take some screenshots and email them to us. Don't forget to take screenshots in every monitor resolution or tablet orientation. This is a community effort, so let's all pitch in!

Very tiny, but surprisingly flexible. The 300 grid system is all you need to start designing for modern smart-phones or other small-screen devices.

Specs

  • 300px wide
  • 8 columns at 27px
  • 12px gutters
  • 320px total width (if with 10px side margins)
  • Set your viewport to 320px

Ideal For

  • iPhones
  • Android phones
  • Windows phones
  • Portable video game systems with web browsers

The rock-solid "in-between" size grid system. Designs based on 748 are fairly readable on mobile devices and are very accessible for all desktop users. Try giving 748 a try on your next project.

Specs

  • 748px wide
  • 12 columns at 44px
  • 20px gutters
  • 768px total width (if with 10px side margins)
  • Set your viewport to 768px

Ideal For

  • Users with 800x600 screen resolutions.
  • 1024x768 users who do not have their window maximized.
  • iPad users browsing in portrait mode.
  • Other "medium-sized" devices.

If you're not sure where to begin, you should start here. The 978 grid has taken the design world by storm. It's a modern grid that gives designers plenty of canvas area and a balanced amount of whitespace—yet small enough to fit on your mother's PC monitor.

Specs

  • 978px wide
  • 12 columns at 54px
  • 30px gutters
  • 1002px total width (if with 12px side margins)
  • Set your viewport to 1024px

Ideal For

  • Most websites
  • 1024x768 users who maximize their browser window.
  • iPad users browsing in landscape mode.

978 still not big enough for you? Try 1218. We expect this grid to become the new standard very shortly, as the majority of current computer users already support this resolution or higher.

Specs

  • 1218px wide
  • 16 columns at 48px
  • 30px gutters
  • 1248 total width (if with 15px side margins
  • Set your viewport to 1280px

Ideal For

  • The very near future.
  • Users with screen resolutions larger than 1024x768.
  • Standard size laptops

We don't expect 1378 to be used by the mainstream for quite some time, but if you have a controlled user group—such as in a corporate intranet—this grid system will give you unprecedented canvas area.

Specs

  • 1378px wide
  • 16 columns at 58px
  • 30px gutters
  • 1408px total width (if with 15px side margins)
  • Set your viewport to 1440px

Ideal For

  • Specialized applications where users are guaranteed to have large monitors.
